Patients having planned orthopaedic surgery will be supported in their recovery by the Elective Orthopaedic Therapy Team.
The multidisciplinary therapy team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and therapy assistants, based on site, provide a seven-day service to patients undergoing a range of surgeries including upper and lower limb joint replacements, arthroscopies, shoulder, hand, foot and ankle surgery.
They work closely with the orthopaedic consultants and nursing team providing therapy intervention on the elective orthopaedic ward.
Treatment for patients due to undergo total hip and total knee replacements commences ahead of the operation. The therapists endeavour to contact all patients prior to admission to carry out a baseline assessment of their current function, prepare and educate them regarding admission, surgery and post-op rehabilitation and establish any need for equipment provision.
They work with patients aiming for a length of stay of one to four days for patients undergoing joint replacements and also provide an accelerated rehabilitation recovery programme. Each patient is assessed and an agreed treatment plan aims to provide functional goal led intervention, enabling independent mobility, self-care activities and ensuring a timely patient-centred discharge from the ward.
