Staff Recognition & Engagement
Here at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals we recognise the hard work and dedication that all of our staff make to continuously provide the highest standards of care to our patients. In return, we celebrate the successes and achievements of our staff in the following ways.
Additional Information
- Staff Recognition & Rewards
Throughout the year we celebrate our staff through the Employee of the Month and once a year we host our Annual Staff Awards Evening. We also celebrate our staff reaching their career milestones through our Long Service Awards and we also encourage other local recognition and reward initiatives within our departments and teams.
Employee of the Month
The Trust recognises individuals who have gone beyond the call of duty and who are nominated by their colleagues. These individuals are put forward for the Employee of the Year at the Annual Staff Awards.
Annual Staff Awards Evening
Our Annual Staff Awards recognise and celebrate the hard work and dedication shown by our colleagues and teams across the Trust, who, throughout the year have gone above and beyond in their role and contributed to outstanding patient care.
Award categories include: People's Choice Award, chosen by the St Helens Star readers, Excellence in Clinical Care, Excellence in Support Services, Excellence in Service Improvement, Excellence in Patient Experience, Employee of the Year, Team of the Year. The event is always full of surprises and celebrity appearances and is the highlight of the Trust's social calendar.
This event is hosted in M&S Bank Arena each year. This event is at no cost to the NHS.
Recognition for Long Service
We recognise the staff that chose to have a long and successful career here with us at St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals with our annual long service awards. As a token of our appreciation, we recognise all of our staff that complete over 25 and 40 years' service with a certificate, commemorative badge and gift vouchers.
We also regularly recognise our staff in retirement with gift vouchers.
National Recognition
Our staff strive for excellence and we encourage and support them to shout about the great work they're doing by nominating themselves or others for national awards.
- Staff Engagement
At MWL we value the knowledge, experience and expertise of our staff and we are committed to creating opportunities where our staff can share ideas, give feedback and engage with the Trust at all levels to aid and enhance staff experience and patient outcomes. Some of our staff engagement initiatives are as follows:
Cultural Surveys
Our cultural surveys are a critical staff engagement tool, allowing our staff to share their views on key areas which form the culture they work in and enables management teams to gain a real insight into the culture and experiences in their work area. This insight will help identify any changes that may be required to aid continuous improvement to the culture, their team and patient experience.
NHS People Pulse
A national online survey developed in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement to gather views and opinions of staff to improve support during the COVID-19 response and recovery phase.
NHS Staff Survey
Our NHS Staff Survey offers staff the opportunity to anonymously share their thoughts about their working life at MWL. We will ask for staff views and experiences on a range of areas that affect their everyday working life - from support of managers and colleagues, training and development, to wellbeing initiatives. The results of the NHS Staff Survey lead to action plans and improvements to be addressed quickly.
Staff Friends and Family Test
The Friends and Family Test (FFT) is a vital tool for us to gain feedback from patients about the care they receive and the services we provided.
Team Talks
Team Talks create opportunities for a mixed group of staff, from a range of clinical and non-clinical roles to come together to engage and interact directly with the members of the Trust Board. This gives staff the opportunity to share their experiences of what works well and what doesn’t work well in their working environments. This event provides a valuable insight for both staff and the Trust Board members to learn and hear how the individual contribution of staff members directly impacts staff, patients and families.
Staff Engagement App
Staff Engagement App is the mobile go-to for staff to access the most up to date Trust information. The App offers a source of streamlined, relevant information effectively putting the Trust in your pocket whether you’re on-site or remote.
