Our Services A - Z - Orthoptic Department

About the service

Orthoptists work as part of the eye care team. We are based in the eye clinic at St Helens Hospital and provide services to the St.Helens and Knowsley demographic.

Orthoptists have specialist knowledge and training in the diagnosis and treatment of eye muscle imbalances, squints and lazy eye (amblyopia). We work closely with Ophthalmologists (eye specialists), and Optometrists (opticians).

Within Orthoptics, we offer a range of Specialist services including:

  • Paediatric and adult squint clinics
  • Paediatric and adult squint clinics
  • Refraction clinics
  • Specific literacy difficulty (or VPD) clinics
  • Stroke clinics (and In-patient assessments at Whiston Hospital)
  • Reception Class Vision Screening in primary schools

Children's clinics are also provided at a number of health centres across St Helens and Knowsley. Referrals are accepted from GPs, Health Visitors, School Health, Educational Services and other medical professionals. Additionally, parents are able to self-refer into the children's Orthoptic Service by contacting the department.
