About the service
The Medical Engineering Department, based at Whiston Hospital, is responsible for the maintenance, repair and management of medical devices within Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
The medical equipment maintained by Medical Engineering Department includes life support, patient monitoring, patient therapy, diagnostic, ventilator and anaesthetic equipment.
The Trust has in excess of 16,500 medical devices in use, in departments such as Intensive Therapy Unit, Operating Theatres, Coronary Care Unit, Neonatal Unit etc.
The Medical Engineering Department is committed to managing and maintaining medical equipment to achieve quality, safety, reliability and customer satisfaction.

We are a multidisciplinary team made up of:
- Medical Engineering Manager
- 9 x Medical Engineers of different disciplines and experience
- Medical Engineering Administrator
- Location
The Medical Engineering Department is based at Whiston Hospital, but has a satellite work shop at St Helens Diagnostic and Treatment Centre.
