About the service
MWL has Learning Disability Specialist Nurses to support adult patients with Learning Disabilities / Autism to ensure all reasonable adjustments are in place to help facilitate a positive experience when attending Whiston & St Helens Hospitals.
Please make contact if you require advice / support regarding the care of a patient with a learning disability and / or autism.
We can provide support & advice on:
- Planning for admissions and outpatient appointments
- Ensuring “Reasonable Adjustments” are put in place to enable patients to access care safely. Advice on Hospital Passports
- Ensuring all Patients with a Learning Disability and / or Autism have an alert placed on Electronic Patient Records
- Advice in relation of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 for Patients with Learning Disabilities who may lack capacity to consent to treatment
- Provide guidance for staff teams if a patient is anxious about treatment / provide distraction therapy / pictorial communication to aid understanding.
- Sign post you to resources e.g. easy read
- Support to ensure safe discharge planning: through liaison with Community Learning Disability Teams.
