Our Wards - Whiston Hospital - Ward 4B - Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU)

Overview

The Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) is based at Ward 4B, Whiston Hospital, and is a 32 bedded Surgical/GP Assessment and Elective Surgery Ward.

Patients are referred to the Surgical Assessment Ward from the following areas the Accident and Emergency Department (AED), GPs, Walk-in Centres to undergo further assessment.

On arrival to the SAU, patients will be reviewed by a doctor and following further assessment a plan of care will be commenced.

The GP service on Ward 4B is co-ordinated by a senior nurse and a surgical doctor. All patients referred to the unit are given strict appointment times.

During your appointment you will be assessed and a treatment plan made. At this stage in your journey it does not necessarily mean you will be admitted into hospital.

Ward 4B is extremely busy due to a high volume of patients. To ensure the health and safety of patient’s staff and visitors can we please ask you to keep the number of people accompanying you to a minimum.

We have elective patients from specialities- Colorectal, General Surgery, ENT, Breast, Vascular and Urology.
The nursing staff work closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary team including nurse specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and the pain team. Utilising these other members ensures that patients and relatives on 4B receive the highest possible standard of care.

The nursing team on 4B are highly skilled, friendly and dedicated to providing high quality care to patients and families.
