Our Wards - Whiston Hospital - Ward 3E - Orthopaedic Elective Ward
Overview
Ward 3E Orthopaedic is a designated elective ward situated on the 3rd floor in the green zone of Whiston Hospital.
It specialises in the care of patients who are undergoing joint replacement surgery which includes hip and knee replacements as well as other planned upper and lower limb orthopaedic procedures.
Surgery is undertaken seven days a week.
The ward consists of 8 beds and 1 cubicle.
Facilities also include a joint replacement dressing clinic (for wound care management).
Patients who are undergoing a joint replacement will be invited to attend the joint school (A pre-operative educational forum), which is held at Whiston Hospital on Ward 3B. This school is facilitated by a nurse from the ward team as well as a member of the therapy staff, and it is here that vital information is given to patients regarding their forthcoming surgery and what to expect.
The ward offers a 4-week open door policy for patients’ who have undergone joint replacement surgery, whereby the patients wound can be monitored until it has healed. As such, you will be given appointments by the ward staff to attend the joint replacement dressing clinic, which is based in fracture clinic, and the ward telephone number and advised to contact the ward should you have any concerns.

- Personal Belongings
Please bring in appropriate night wear, loose fitting comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear as well as any toiletries you may require.
You are allowed to bring in snacks, books and magazines.
There is a bedside cabinet for the storage of personal items and a lockable medication cupboard.
It is advisable that you do not bring any valuable items into hospital as unfortunately the trust cannot be held responsible for missing or broken items
Please bring a one week supply of medication into hospital with you.
- Meals and Drinks
Meals are served at the following times
Breakfast 08.00 - 08.30am
Lunch 12.00 - 12.30pm
Dinner 17.00 - 17.30pm
The ward assistant will provide hot drinks at mealtimes (08.00am, 12.30pm and 17.00pm) as well as mid-morning, mid-afternoon and pre bed.
Special Diets
If you are on a special diet or therapeutic diet, the ward staff will contact our hospital dietician to arrange this for you. The dietician will also be available Monday-Friday to provide specialist information regarding your diet.
- Safety
Safety is a priority when you come into hospital and the ward has a ‘call don’t fall policy’. This is essential in trying to prevent inpatient falls whilst in hospital.
This will be discussed with the patient both on admission and also at joint school.
- Medications
If you require medications to take home with you, these will be given to you by the ward staff before you leave. Please don't leave without them. It can take a few hours for the Hospital Pharmacy to prepare your medications, so bear this in mind when you arrange a time to leave.
- Discharge Home

Outpatient appointments: You will be informed if an appointment has already been made for you or whether it will follow on in the post.
Transport: Please try to arrange your own transport home from the Hospital. Hospital transport is only available for patients who cannot as a result of their clinical condition use other forms of transport

We aim to make your stay with us as pleasant and comfortable as possible, and strive to provide the highest quality of care. If you or your family have any suggestions or comments, please discuss them with the ward manager or nurse in charge, or you can discuss them (or any complaints) with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service.
