Our Services A - Z - Phlebotomy Services

About the service

The Trust provides a number of Phlebotomy Services within Whiston and St Helens hospitals and also in the community across Halton, Knowsley and St Helens.

Blood tests

Our Phlebomoty clinics use an online booking system for patients over the age of 16.

To book an appointment, for a blood test, at one of our clinics please follow this link.

The results from blood tests can be used to help:

  • Make a diagnosis of illness or infection (or rule something out)
  • Monitor treatment
  • Monitor the health of someone with a long-term health condition.

GPs and other healthcare professionals refer patients to the service when they need a blood test to be taken.

Please Note - Blood forms must be brought to the appointment

Please Note - Blood forms must be brought to the appointment.

  • If you need to book an appointment for a child under the age of 16, please telephone 0151 430 1702
  • Having a Paediatric (Child's) Blood Test information leaflet
  • If you are booking an appointment on behalf of someone else, please ensure you enter the details for the person who requires the blood test.

Our phlebotomists are specially trained to ensure that your blood test is as quick and painless as possible. They will draw blood from your arm to collect samples of your blood to send to the laboratory for testing.

After your blood sample has been taken, you will be given a pad to put pressure on the site of the injection to help stop the bleeding and minimise bruising, some bruising may still occur. Most blood tests only take a few minutes to complete.

The results of your test will be sent to the healthcare professional who referred you for your blood test.

Changing or cancelling your appointment

If you can’t attend your appointment, that's not a problem - it’s an easy process to cancel and rearrange. We can then ensure that any unwanted appointments can be reallocated, which will help reduce overall waiting times.

If you need to change or cancel your blood test booking, please use the link in your booking confirmation email or follow this link and click on 'My Bookings'.

Important information

Please only book a blood test if you have been advised it is needed by your GP / referrer.

It is important that you bring the paper blood form given to you by your GP/referrer. If you have not been given a form please contact your GP and ask them for one. Arriving without your form may result in delays to your blood test or in some circumstances the blood test may not be able to be taken.
