About the service
A specialist Contact Lens service is provided for patients referred from hospital consultants or GPs
The Optometrists also work alongside the Orthoptists and Paediatric Ophthalmologists in designated children’s clinics.
Our Optometry department is responsible for:
- Fitting specialty contact lenses
- Assisting the corneal team in monitoring keratoconus progression
- Assisting the paediatric team in paediatric refraction clinics
- Assisting the medical retina team in macular clinics

Our Specialist Contact Lens and adult refraction clinics take place in the Eye clinic at St Helens hospital.
Our children’s clinics take place at St.Helens Hospital and at a number of community locations.

In general, our contact lens service is for patients whose vision cannot be improved with spectacles, but can be improved with contact lenses.
We can prescribe and fit contact lenses for a range of medical eye conditions, such as keratoconus or scarred corneas.
We also treat patients with very high prescriptions or to relieve pain or to aid cosmesis where an eye has become unsightly following damage from infection or trauma.
- At an initial assessment, suitability for contact lenses is determined and the risks and benefits discussed.
- A scan of the corneal shape will be taken if not already done and vision with spectacles measured.
- A lens type will be selected depending on medical need. As the lenses are often complex designs, and are therefore usually specially made, the contact lenses will be issued at a separate appointment.
- Sometimes several appointments will be needed to achieve a satisfactory fit.
- Instruction on handling and caring for your lenses is given at the collection appointment. After care appointments continue for as long as the lenses are worn.
