• About the Team

  The Gynaecology-Oncology team have an established multi-disciplinary team (MDT) consisting of the following ‘core’ group members and we meet weekly to discuss patient care:

• Location

  Our services are provided across both Whiston and St Helens site:

  Whiston Hospital – surgical services are provided on low grade Endometrial and Cervical cancers.

  St Helens Hospital – the vast majority of chemotherapy can be delivered in the Trust’s dedicated chemotherapy day unit – The Lilac Centre. This unit is only one of its kind to hold the Macmillan Environmental Award. There is a full range of complimentary therapies on offer to patients attending the Lilac Centre. Radiotherapy is delivered at Clatterbridge.

  Patients requiring surgery for high grade Endometrial, Vulval, Ovarian and Cervical cancers are referred to our Consultant colleagues at the Liverpool Women’s Cancer Centre.

  Title - Cervical Polypectomy

  Description - Your doctor/nurse has advised you to have a polypectomy, which is the removal of a polyp.

  Title - Cold Coagulation Treatment

  Description - Cold coagulation may be performed on women who have delicate soft cells on their cervix which bleed easily when touched (these women do not necessarily have an abnormality on their cervix).

  Title - Colposcopy Examination

  Description - We have invited you to have a colposcopy because of the result of your cervical screening test (previously called a ‘smear test’).

  Title - Enhanced Recovery Programme: How to recover quickly from your gynaecological surgery

  Description - When you are admitted to hospital for your surgery, you will be taking part in an Enhanced Recovery Programme.

  Title - Gynaecological Oncology Multi-disciplinary team

  Description - The MDT is a team that is made up of Consultant Specialists from Gynaecology, Oncology, Radiology, Pathology, a Gynaecology Specialist Nurse and an MDT Co-Ordinator.

  Title - Loop Excision

  Description - You have been referred to Colposcopy Clinic because your smear has shown abnormal cells. About 6 in 10 people will have abnormal cells found at colposcopy. The medical term for abnormal cells is CIN (‘cervical intraepithelial neoplasia’).

  Title - Reviewing your cervical screening history

  Description - Cervical screening reduces the risk of developing cervical cancer. Regular screening is the best way to detect changes to the cervix early on, but like other screening tests it is not perfect.

  Title - Vulvoscopy

  Description - As you know your G.P has referred you to the Vulvoscopy Clinic. This is to investigate the problems that you have been experiencing in your vulval area.
