Our Services A - Z - Prosthetics and Laser Service
About the service
The Prosthetic department and Laser Service is part of the Mersey Regional Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Centre which serves a population of approximately 5 million people.
“Innovation” is defined as “introducing something new” and the Prosthetic department based at Whiston Hospital fulfil this definition with every patient that they treat. The work carried out within the department is non-prescriptive, requiring open minded planning and manufacturing processes to provide our patients with unique solutions to each individual’s condition. Further innovations are developed beyond the area of direct patient care. The Prosthetic Team have constantly delivered a range of bespoke models and interventions providing NHS staff with tangible methods to deliver or teach the specialised care needed for our patients.
The Prosthetic Team are committed to sharing these innovations by developing partnerships throughout the NHS. The team also manage the Maxillofacial Laboratory based on the Aintree University Hospital site. This work involves all aspects of maxillofacial and craniofacial surgery planning and complex facial prosthetics.
- Referring to Prosthetics and Laser
The Prosthetic Department will take referrals for prosthetics, burns, micropigmentation, skin camouflage, electrolysis and laser from across Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and Isle of Man. Referrals can be sent directly to the Service Lead, Anthony Simpson by letter or via email.
The Prosthetic Department can be found on Level 3, Green Zone, Whiston Hospital, telephone number 0151 430 1854.
- Our Clinics
Prosthetic Clinic
The prosthetics service provides facial and body prosthetics such as eyes, digits, nasal prostheses, auricular prostheses, lower leg contour defects, custom-made chest implants, surgical planning models and teaching models.
Tattoo Clinic
Micropigmentation to restore eyebrows for alopecia/burns, lip outline for cleft lip/burns, nipple areola complex (NAC) for breast cancer and some scars.
Scar Clinic
Advice and help with the management of keloid and hypertrophic scarring, burns masks and pressure splints.
Scarring following a burn injury can be more devastating than the actual burn itself, however, with the team’s early intervention and skills in conjunction with the rest of the Burn MDT, this scarring is kept to a minimum and produces some excellent end results.
Electrolysis Clinic
To remove unwanted hair after skin grafts and other related hair growth when laser treatment is not indicated.
Skin Camouflage Clinic
To help camouflage burns, scars, birthmarks, and many other skin complaints.
Laser Clinic
Numerous laser treatments are available including vascular malformations, various skin lesions/scars, post-traumatic or post-surgical scarring and hair removal for certain conditions. Our state-of-the-art laser facility based at St Helens Hospital is one of the best NHS laser facilities in the UK offering one of the largest ranges of treatment options available in the area and referrals are received for the treatment of scars from across the UK.
- 3D Printing and Planning
The department has the latest software and hardware available to plan surgical guides and print surgical models.
